What is DNS and what are the settings I need to change?

DNS - domain name system
When an internet user sends email or points a browser to an Internet domain such as
www.sophiosoft.com , the DNS translates the names into Internet addresses (69.46.19.48).   The DNS server information is not 'private' or 'confidential' in nature, as it is the public address of your website's location.

When you reserve a domain name at a registrar such as Network Solutions, Register.com. or www.powerpipe.com (who we recommend based on price and ease of use), you are normally setup to use the registrar's DNS server.  This is ok if you know how to adjust the various settings, but we recommend our clients to use our DNS server so that we may do it on your behalf.

Look in the registars various account maintenance pages for something that says "Update DNS" or "Use different DNS servers", and enter the following information.

ns1.sophiosoft.com
ns2.sophiosoft.com

If your site is not NEW, then this should NOT be done until your site is ready to be launched on the Sophio servers.  You will be sent a welcome email once we are ready for you to change your DNS servers.

The change of your DNS may result in some downtime based on how the Internet works, and you should always expect the change to take between 24-72 hours.
